Thanks, Ruth and Bob, for your answers. (Bob, I thought of using the Reference option, but as I understand it, then I could only have one reference per individual, and I have many in my notebooks that I'd want to get at.) A corollary to all this is that I want to be able to print out a list which has fields for the individual, the notebook volume and page, and a one- or two-word descrption of the event. I couldn't seem to get all those things in a list report, however I manipulated the database. (The printing or not printing of footnotes was easy enough--just call them "research notes").
After trying all sorts of experiments, including creating a notebook event (!), I decided to go with creating a companion file in MS Excel (selecting that as an external program so I can bring it up quickly from the Preferences menu) and entering the notebook info in Excel at the same time as I edit the individual's record. This way I can also enter the individual's record number in the Excel file along with the other info.
If anybody has a better idea, I'd love to hear it--
