I'm not Maggie, but I think I can answer your questions. UFT has been discontinued. I don't know what version you have. There are SOME updates available free for download from the internet. Otherwise, if you don't know the program very well and want something newer, I'd suggest going to TMG (The Master Genealogist)as it can take all of the UFTree files (without GedCom) and import them directly. If you want to stick with UFTree, do as Maggie suggested for backing up (make sure to back up ALL files and not just the project) and restoring. You might find an article on our site helpful:
