Yes, lots of the web-based stuff is US-based. I live in Australia too (and have english/irish/scottish ancestors), and the sites that I like to look at include:
genuki.co.uk (a great resource for all of the UK)
familysearch.com (effectively the IGI on line)
cyndislist.com (a US site, but has lists lots of good sites for research all over the world)
freebmd.rootsweb.com (you can look at parts of the English BDM index online and free!)
If know exactly where in England your ancestors are from, let me know and I may be able to come up with some other sites.
