Thank you for the suggestion, I'll try it as soon as I can. Meanwhile I found out that as long as I enter a very low number, it will tell me that it's taken and will then offer to assign the next higher up number that is free. A slightly slow but not very painful way to eventually match the numbers to the number of records.
