I have a surname project that would have the same problem.

What "if" you gave all the unconnected persons with that surname the same father. Say call him Father Irons. Then if a connection is made later all you have to do is remove the "Father Irons" from the father role and put the correct one in.

In my surname project I have recorded persons from phone lists, SSDI, and other sources. I have grouped them by states, so the Father is called Persons from Ohio or Persons from Pennsylvania.

I just ran a FJ report on one of these states and came up with 54 children. :-). Since there wasn't any of them having a family none of course were continued like you would with a family.
