My Cheer Goes Up - UFT Forever!

G'day All,

I've been away from the List for awhile, so I don't know what the discussions are at present.

Last year we were notified that UFT was going into oblivion - at least as far as future development goes. Products such as Legasy and TMG <The Master Genealogist> were touted as the successors and if anyone had any sense, they would sooner or later move over to those products.

Well, I must say that I've looked at several products over the last few months, including (of course) FTM, PAF, Generations, and the much-praised TMG 4.0 Gold <quite an expensive product downunder>. But I am here to say that among all the products none of them measured up to the flexibility and user-friendliness of UFT.

Did I say user-friendly? Yes, of course! I returned TMG because I could not make heads or tails of it. It touts customised reports but reading the manual and the help files were like reading Greek. The screens that we work on are nothing short of ugly. And when it comes to building reports it felt a lot slower than UFT. And where's a feature for me to build web pages? I'm glad that TMG had a 90-day refund policy. I didn't wait that long.

Granted, when it comes to generating reports, UFT can be as slow as molasses compared to the speed of FTM <Family Tree Maker> but you cannot beat the form view where all the relations to the individual are listed: parents, children, spouse, children. One double-click and you are on a new form. Press F6 and you've got a tree view.

I do a lot of on-line searches and I work in tandem with a friend from Cornwall who has FTM up on his screen. We converse with each other (thanks to MSN Messenger) while doing web searches, or comparing possible finds at www.familysearch.com My Cornish friend is quite impressed that I can jump so quickly from one person to the next, especially when it comes to siblings. Entering data is a sinch.

Yes, I would have preferred it if UFT had its bugs ironed out. Yes, I wish there was more speed. Yes, I'm still frustrated by occasional crashes (less so, BTW under WinMe), but in my book. There has never been a product as good as UFT. I hope that its owners will eventually come to realise that and either further develop it, or give it to enthusiastic UFT genealogists/programmers to do the same.

UFT Forever!
