I have been away from the board for a while, but I do not find any operational problem, aside from a bit slow response (which could be at my end).
One way not to loose your place on the main list is to right click on the message you want to see and select "open in new window" from the pop-up menu. This starts a new window with your browser, and after you have gone down to the bottom of the thread, you can just close the new window without having to back out of each message.
The down side of this technique is that it does not mark messages as read unless you actually link to a message and return, or do a Refresh of the page.
