Word document as media?

I have recently found some early census records for my ancestor which I photocopied. I've also transcribed the information into a census extraction e-form which has been saved as a MS-Word document. I know that if I scan the photocopy, I can attach the scan to my ancestor's record as a media file. But what about the Word document? I've tried experimenting with OLE but I don't think I'm approaching the problem correctly.

Has anyone attached an MS-Word file to a record as media (or in some other way) so that the two are linked together?

Would I be better off just attaching a scan of the photocopy?
