TMG is more flexible. You can make it do just about anything you want. And it handles contradictory information better than UFT. After I used the demo, I felt comfortable that the learning curve wasn't too great. I'm waiting for the 4a patch for importing UFT data before I start seriously using the program.
You definitely don't want to switch to Family Tree Maker if you have a large database or lots of references.
Genealogy.com has done a terrible thing, but it's not surprising. UFT 3 has always been buggy and the last time I called customer support they were really snotty and unhelpful. Basically, the guy didn't know what he was talking about. I guess they've been planning to dump us for some time.
