Restoration isn't the issue. It's the problems I noted encountering with vanishing data. Not surprisingly, restoring from Backup resulted in the same problems!

I have 2 projects going and find <<30>> files assigned to each project ID in the Projects directory, along with 3 "name" files (icp, ftp and pro) for each one.

Thanks for the useful info. Still not clear on whether anyone has encountered the problems I had, whether 3.1 is flaky or even worth the trouble of intalling unless one is dealing with the specific issues listed in their "bug fix" list. All of the postings I've seen re: 3.1 deal NOT with the patch itself but with installing the patch -- a problem they seem to have fixed.
As a relative newcomer, am also curious why so many folks are jumping to TMG vs. Mattel/Broderbund's "other" genealogy acquisition, FTM. Is it simply a better program? One would think that FTM would be reworked to include all the favorite features of UFT though I've seen nothing indicating this.
