I think the philosophy was “if you cannot beat them join them and if you cannot join them buy them” and so UFT became a part of ThLCom then Matt and so on. A company however needs to make money to survive and with prices of software dropping to production costs it is hard to survive. Remember the days of Roots3 I paid 250 U$ 14 years ago! Some year (maybe 2) ago the LDS Church gave PAF 4.0 at no charge many genealogist shouted hurray but in the end this was devastating for other software makers.
