Transfer, don't kill UFT

I just returned from a holiday in Scotland doing real family history research and read the sad news.

The special offer made to UFT users is a joke. Real genealogy research is looking for original or near-original records, not searching the web and collecting names. You can find out much more about your ancestors by visiting their places of residence (or what is left of those places), checking local resources that won't get on the web in our lifetimes (if ever), and putting the information together in an organized database that can produce meaningful reports (complete with citations, etc.).

UFT is the best at helping with those tasks, in my opinion. Nothing can offer on the net can come close to meeting those needs. And since their one real database product is much inferior at helping us record family history, they can't help that way either.

If wanted to be fair to UFT users, they would try to let someone else continue to develop and support it. Someone might even think it is a real asset worth buying, whose value they can enhance by building further. Or it could be a company like the makers of The Master Genealogist, who would merge the special features of UFT with their own product, to earn the title of the "ultimate" family tree program.

So Paul, could you make one last attempt at persuading the powers that be in your company to be fair to us dedicated UFT users. If that attempt has already been made and has come up empty, ok. But we don't want to dumb down our data to make it fit a less capable product.
