Dear Bob, thank you for your advice. I have reviewed the principal roles and these were all indeed marked "T". While a good suggestion, I think that this aspect was finally perhaps not the reason.
After some further experimenting with merging the Gedcom files, I got every now and then an error message whereby the program requested for a particular *.dbi file (I am sorry but I did not write down the full file name, on the other hand I searched my full hard disk and no such files were on my system).

Accordingly I decided to re-install (update) my installation in the same directory. Therafter I reindexed my two projects to be merged.

Perhaps the non standard UFT set up with seperate directorieshas something to do with all this. Anyway what ever the cause, I managed to have it corrected and I am happy that I finally managed to merge these two Gedcom files.
