When you check both Parent and Child the image will appear twice as you stated. I see nothing wrong with this. The problem is if you don't check both and say check Parent, then if you have an image attached to an individual who is not a parent it would never appear. If you checked Child only, then the image would appear only where the person is listed as a child, which might be okay except I like having the image where the individual is a parent. So I usually check both. Attaching images to events is helpful also. You can attach a wedding photo to a wedding event, a baby photo to a birth event, a graduation photo to a graduation event, etc., etc.
