Joe,
Your problem is not with you alone. The program is "designed" to combine those footnotes into one, which I agree is pretty stupid. I would like to use separate notes for dates and places as well but am forced to use one note for the event and then make little notes within the notes to describe which source was for the date and which for the place. Sometimes you just have to adapt to the software.
