I like your sorting idea! I started to implement your suggestion of using /de Rastric/ as the surname - then realized that some generations would be indexed under the "d's" and later generations which had dropped the "de" would then be indexed under the "R's"! With your idea of an indexing field (much like the sort date field) this problem would be solved.
