It's easy to explain. Ever since Family Tree Maker has offered its customers the ability to create User Home Pages at our Web site and had other members only areas we needed a way to tell who was authorized to get to those specific areas.
The way we did that was through a cookie. Whereas UFT chose to use some sort of ActiveX plug-in (which was one of the reasons that UFT only recognized certain versions of certain browsers), we used cookies. The problem with cookies is that while they are easy to set, they are easy for customers to lose, whether that is done on purpose (using some sort of cookie cutting program) or accidentally (moving to a new browser or machine).

The effect was that if you created a User Home Page with your first account and then signed up for a second account, you lost access to the User Home Page created by the first account. That caused lots of technical support time as we helped those who created multiple accounts for themselves. Furthermore, if you created two accounts for yourself with the same information, if you then tried to verify yourself we couldn't match you up to any of your accounts because the verification information matched more than one account.

So we created and implemented a supplemental system of usernames and passwords. Our primary way of recognizing customers is still cookies. But now, everyone with an Online account is also given a username and password that can be used as a backup in order to have the Web site reset the cookie.

Part of UFT 3.0 was that some users were given complementary subscriptions to GenealogyLibrary.com. In order for this to happen, these UFT customers needed to have online accounts created for them and that Online account would contain the information so they could get to GenealogyLibrary.com.

When we started giving usernames and passwords, every time someone created a new account, they were sent an email with information about their subscription which also told them their default username and password as well as a way to change them to a combination they may more easily remember.

That was an oversight. Last week, I re-wrote that email and the online team is going to look and see which product is being used to create the Online account and will be sending different emails.

Have you tried to access GenealogyLibrary.com? Your account has access. Should anything every happen to your cookie, going Online through UFT should reset it. But if you ever have a problem and need to verify your account, if you forget the information you used to verify your account you can use the username and password to reset the cookie. And, if you ever go to GenealogyLibrary.com and the cookie isn't there (assuming that you're still within the period when you should have access), there's a link that says "Subscribers Log In Now" that you can use while will also set the cookie in your browser.
