I need something more than Jr. or III for my duplicate names. Even my American ancestors didn't regularly use that notation. (I have several documents listing "Salmon Wedge", without indicating the father or son, although both were in the neighbourhood at the time.) In Britain, they just reuse the name, and some families even seemed to have have a preference for a particular female name, with several generations "John" married a "Mary Ann", for instance, and then named a daughter "Mary Ann".
I have UFT add birth/death dates just so I can keep them apart (and I estimate a birth date if I have no real evidence of a particular date). I don't know how this convension would pass through a Gedcom to to another system; presumably it would depend on output options of the other program. I found too many more serious limitations in FTM to investigate it very far.
