There have been a few bugs identified for a few of the reports, but most reports usually work correctly. The only bug I have encountered in the Family Journal report (the one that produces text reports) has to do with citations within a text block associated with an individual or an event. There are lots of ways of documenting the sources of your information within UFT, and citations within text is only one of them. If you are starting relatively fresh, just don't use this method until they fix the bug. Or get an earlier version that does not have this bug. I use UFT 3.0 for most of my editing, but 2.9 for family journal reports - a bit inconvienient at times, but it works well.
The other bug I have encountered is when doing a global find-and-replace on the free-form date fields. That messed up some of my fancier dates (those with additional text within parentheses). Date fields are unusual in that there are three of them (free-form, structured, and sort dates) which usually are compatible (but there are sometimes good reason for not having them the same - just another example of UFT's flexibility). I don't know of other find-and-replace problems.
Others can list a few other specific problems with UFT 3.0.
Another big source of complaint on this board are problems with uploading UFT generated web pages onto the UFT web site. That's not really a UFT 3.0 bug, but in any case, they should have that fixed by the time you would want to use it. Others have just uploaded their web pages to other free services, such as Rootsweb.
Our concerns with support may be a long term problem, or may be due to an overly sectrative management policy plus delays in getting a wanted upgrade out that fix most of the known problems. And that could be due in part to the management turmoil caused by a succession of corporate acquisitions and the spin-off of The company also seems to be putting more of its efforts in FTM - it's a bigger seller, but it is also a simpler product that needs more work by the company to keep it up with the competition. UFT is already the best so I think the company thinks it has some breathing room before the others catch up.
There has been concern about where we would go if does something stupid like kill off UFT. A number of us say we will continue to use it as long as we have an operating system platform that runs it. There is one other program (TMG) that claims a fair degree of compatibility to UFT, but it still is not as powerful as UFT. It would frustrate many of us if we had to switch because we would miss many of the features we love in UFT.
So should you start up again in genealogy using UFT? If the company does come out with an improved version, I think you would end up with something less than the best if you go to another product. If they don't upgrade, and the product dies on the vine, you may have saved yourself some work by choosing another product. But I also think UFT saves us research work by giving us a better organization of our family history information.
Many of us think that UFT will somehow survive and get better. And I think all of us on this board hope it will.
