Bob said "I want to make a group out of the following. All the "male" persons with "two" surnames, and "without parents".
First use the name search specifiying /first surname/ or /second surname/ setting the "replace list with those found". You now have the people with those two surnames in the name list.
Next do a search - individuals - vital statistics and select the "unrecorded parents" with the code "Y" and "replace list with those found." you now have the vitals list containing all people in your data base with unrecorded parents.
What remains is to combine those two lists so that you get those individuals which appear in both lists.
Go to Search - grouping, select the Names item and "replace grouping list with selected list" and click on "search." Then select the vital statistics list and "Keep if in selected list and grouping" and click on search.
the results should now be what you want.
PS - Did you get our RUG "Searching and Grouping" CD? If so, I guess I flunked in preparing the tutorial....
