I am uncertain whether there is a recommended way of accomplishing what you desire but here is how I do it. I edit the divorce event of either of the individuals involved. Near bottom of the divorce edit box appears the names of both individuals. I click on the name of the spouse of the descendant and uncheck the "Principal" box. That should do it.
