Family Tree Maker is a good basic genealogy program with lots of nice reports and charts.
UFT is a much more powerful program with a much better method of entering and navigating through your family history (as opposed to looking at your family's genealogy - who is related to whom by blood or marriage). It is also strong on documenting your sources of information. I believe these two features make it the best program for recording your findings and for planning where to look next for new data.
FTM is often sold for a higher price because you have to pay for all the marketing that is done for the product and for the collection and publication of many CDs worth of catalogue indexes for other CDs you can buy.
When I tried FTM, I was quickly discouraged by the limits I encountered in entering the data the way I wanted (which, of course, was influenced by my Roots3/4 and UFT background). All we found on the CDs were references to other CDs containing our own data that a relative had submitted, without telling us (we've made no contacts through that meduim). Your luck with the CDs, of course, could be better.
