>>Or so I thought until I made a second attempt later in the day. At that (later) attempt I was requested to enter my postcode and last four digits of my phone number for verification purposes.<<
In UFT 3 every installation of UFT has a user ID that is generated. When you go online that ID is checked against our online user database. If it is the first time you have gone online through UFT, that number will not exist in the online database and you will be asked to either create a new online account or verify your online account (If you have done this before).
For UFT 3.0 this is necessary in order to use the complementary 3 month subscription to GenealogyLibrary.com. When you create your Online account we create a cookie on your hard drive. That cookie is basically the user ID. When you try and access GenealogyLibrary.com, we check the cookie to see if you are a known user and then, if you are, your account is checked to see if you have an active subscription to GenealogyLibrary.com.
We can check to see if your browser has a cookie that is recognized by our database. This online database is hosted at familytreemaker.com. Go to http://www.familytreemaker.com/cgi-bin/regcheck to check to see if the cookie is set. If it is you should see you user ID as well as your name and city/state. What happens if you do this? If it does recognize you, tell me the last 5 digits of your user ID.
>>This did not however, admit me to the the UFT web site - which was only accessible by exiting UFT and logging on through Internet Explorer.<<
What exactly do you mean? I see that you created an online account on 4 Feb. This also activated your 3 month subscription to GenealogyLibrary.com.
