Paul,
My comment on the space taken up by headers related to individual messages, not the main board listing. On my 9 1/5" high 17" monitor,I have 2" Netscape header lines, 1 1/2" UFT header, 1" banner ad (I'll tolerate that as it helps pay the bills), about 3" of GenForun headers with links displayed in fairly large fonts, 1" for actual message header, and about 3/4" for Netscape and Windows status lines. I guess that all you could change is the UFT header size and the various GenForum lines. A smaller fonts option for the GenForum lines would help those of us who like to squeeze more onto the screen.
I think users should be encouraged to ensure there is a reasonable linkage between the discussion on the previous message and the the reply, possibly using a cut and paste. It is a bit more work, so I suspect that it will seldom be done by users replying to a previous message.
