Thanks, Paul for the info on missing characters. As to inserting an occasional subscript or superscript or whatever into the text, it seemed to work O.K. for me. If anyone should find that they absolutely positively need to put something into a text box that blue hasn't provided for, the Spec can be found on the Microsoft site somewhere.
As for the citation problem, I guess people who only have UFT 3.0 could put in dummy superscript citations for endnotes and still have their text print out until the next upgrade.
