What Paul Lawrence said is correct, of course.

Any footnote is a citing of the source of the information behind a statement, whether it is a statement of fact (birthdate and place) or a statement of opinion (perhaps listing the sources that helped you conclude that something was so.)

A footnote is called a citation when it is used in text created by you or me (as opposed to footnotes for date/place events.)
I don't think my college English teacher ever told me that, or maybe I wasn't listening when she did tell me.

In UFTree the only way you can 'footnote' user entered text is by using the citation button.

The 3.0 bug has nothing to do with what you are citing, only with where you are citing. This 3.0 bug stops printing a Family Journal Report at the point where it finds a citation (footnote to text) in any text box.

The data, the source, the text in the box, nothing is changed in any other way.

UFTree 2.8 did not stop the printing when it found a citation in a text box.

You can tell it is the citation that is stopping the printing of the Family Journal because the program inserts several blank lines at that point.

This is different that having printing stop when it runs into a 'reserved character'. I think that mis-used 'reserved characters' stop the printing but do not insert blank lines. I have not experimented with 'reserved characters'.

If I am wrong, perhaps our blessed Melissa will correct me. She has had to do that before. (grin)

So--go ahead and cite away in your text boxes. But don't use 3.0 to print the Family Journal. Use 2.8 (or 2.9 if you have it?).

If you don't have 2.8, install any earlier version you have (dig out one of those CDs that packrats like me save). Install the older version in its own separate folder anywhere on your hard drive.

Then go online at Go to the tech support column. Find 2.8, download it. Install it over the older version, not over 3.0. Point 2.8 to the same projects and files that 3.0 is using.

Use 3.0 to add to or change data in your projects.

Use 2.8 to print out those Family Journals.

Or wait until the 3.0 bug is fixed. Who know?
Maybe tomorrow?

Maggie Kitts
