Starting Sept. 30, 2014, Genealogy.com will be making a big change. GenForum message boards, Family Tree Maker homepages, and the most popular articles will be preserved in a read-only format, while several other features will no longer be available, including member subscriptions and the Shop.

Bob has good advice... Troy got me hooked on UltraEdit too. You can paste text you wish to examine into that program (make sure to use Select All when copying to clipboard!) and you can switch between a "traditional" notepad-style view, or something us geeks use called "Hex Edit View", this literally shows you every character of the file, as well as its' internal computer code.

I also find, when I just need to see if there are ANY special characters, and I don't need to know what they specifically are, that you can paste text into good old NOTEPAD, and all (or at least most, I don't know if it is in fact all) special characters show as little black boxes.
