My understanding of the GEDCOM Specification (written by the LDS) is that we MUST use a structured date according to one of a very few accepted formats. If we were to export the free-form date, other Genealogy programs would have problems, and we'd be in violation of GEDCOM.

I look upon this as a spec requirement, not a "feature"... Unfortunately, they tried to design to the "lowest common denominator".. In doing so, you lose the flexibility you'd like to have.
