Starting Sept. 30, 2014, Genealogy.com will be making a big change. GenForum message boards, Family Tree Maker homepages, and the most popular articles will be preserved in a read-only format, while several other features will no longer be available, including member subscriptions and the Shop.

When a Gedcom file is opened in Family Treemaker, a database file of the same name with the FTW extension is created and stored in the original folder by default.

Certain additional Family Treemaker files are created and stored in the originating folder as well.

The original Gedcom file, if created or stored in a UFT folder or subfolder should not be affected, but will then have lots of company in the folder. UFT database files, even if in the same folder, should not be affected by the FTM program, at least up through FTM 10.
