Happy New Year to all
Hello Lars,
I have some updates to the Uffmann families in Cincinnati Ohio, cemetery records have been released that give a lot of information.
http://www.springgrove.org/sg/genealogy/sg_genealogy_home.shtm
Spring Grove has my great uncle and aunt, Dr.Henry W. and Emma Uffmann along with Henry W. Uffmann. Henry W., not the Dr., died Jan. 14 1898. Suicide by carbolic acid. Yum. The parents were listed as Herman & Caroline Uffmann, but the address for where he last resided was 1939 Race St. This is the same address that my great grandmother Frieda can be found on in the 1900 census. Since her father, also named Henry W.( or W. Henry) died between 1895 and 1900 I might be inclined to believe this suicide was my gggrandfather. Its posssible that the Caroline was not a mother but his sister, but I have no idea who the Herman is.
Suicide Henry's age was given as 37yr 4mo and 17 days. That would put his birth day at about Oct. of 1860. My gggrandfather was listed on an earlier census as being born 1856. Now there was another Henry on Race St. in 1880, single male who was a cigar maker. He can also be found in Danville Ill. in 1870 listed as a cigar maker. But he was born in 1845.
In 1870 also in Cincinnati is a Herman and Mary Uffmann with a son Henry b. 1860 and a son William b. 1867.This Herman was listed as working in stables in that census. It's possible also that Henry had a different mother and it is a son of Herman that committed suicide. On the 1880 census I believe this same Henry is found in St. Louis Mo. living with a sister Caroline Potting and unmarried sister Mary. My conclusion from all this is the Henry who died in 1898 was a son of a Herman and Caroline, a stepmother named Mary (or Mary Caroline being one and the same)he being an orphan by 1880 and shifts around from relative to relative.
This is interesting in that now we have some confirmation that the Ohio Uffmann's and the Missouri Uffmann's are closely related.
Back to the cemetery records, Walnut Hills has a lot of my family listed. http://www.walnuthillscemetery.org/Genealogy.html
It also poses more questions as I try to fit the families together.
There are two - J. Heinrich died 10/22/1881 age 60 and Johann H. Uffmann died April 28, 1881 aged 25. They are both in sect. 10, lot 502. Were they father and son? Perhaps uncle and nephew? This particular section was jointly owned by Hein.Schermbeck and Hein. Uffmann. Johann Heinrich Schermbeck I think was married to Maria Catherine that is listed in Walnut Hills. Do you have a Maria Uffmann married to a Schermbeck?
Uffmann listed on Walnut Hil:
Anna (dau. of J.H and Catherina) died 2/10/1921 age 62.
Carrie (dau. of J.H and Catherina)died 4/19/1909 age 44.
Catherina (wife of J.H.)died 10/31/1921 age 87.
Ernst Heinr. d. July 7 1879 age 5 no parents listed.
Heinrich d. 10/21/1862 age 1 no parents listed.
Infant Uffmann d. July 17,1905 20months, child of William and Elizabeth, grandchild of above Catherina and J.Heinrich.
J. Heinr. d. 10/22, 1881 age 60 husband of Catherina
Johann H. d. Apr.28 1881 age 25 lists Catherine Uffmann as nearest relative. But does not say parent.
Walter H. d. Feb. 9, 1920 age 20 son of William and Elizabeth (nee Schmidthorst).
William Henry Uffmann d.5/5/1939 son of Henry and Catherina Mickle Uffmann.
Going back to the census of 1860 listed in Mosalem, Dubuque Iowa is ...
Nich. Uffmann age 64 b.abt 1796 and family living next to the McDermette family of Ireland. Wife Cath.65, John 35, Lena 30, Cath.2, Eliz. 4/12, John 35, Susan 30 and Lena 2.All but the young children are from Luxenberg.
Can this get anymore confusing? Two Johns, same age? Is it possible that one of these is the John that went to Cincinnati and Lena is short for Catherina? The John listed above Susan is a cabinet maker, the profession of my John H. Uffmann of Cincinnati, married to Catherina Mickle.
But I find no Nich. in my Uffmann tree.
Any help on straighting this out would be greatly appreciated.

Brenda Meyer
