Dear Jim
John Tyrer was a lay clerk at Chester Cathedral,Cheshire England. He built the Tower in 1601 as part of the water supply system to the city of Chester. He pumped water from the River Dee to the tower and it ran by gravity to the houses.
The tower was above the Bridgegate at the southern approaches to the city and was finally destroyed in 1780.
John Tyrer also laid the floor in the knave of the cathedral. He died in 1634
