Tyrer, James, b. England, abt. 1780, d., worked in Petersburg from 1816 thru 1831. James Tyrer possibly married a Margaret Sefton on 1st April 1804.
In the 1830 US Census Dinwiddie County, Petersburg, James Tyrer is living with a white male (10-20), two (20-30), and himself as between 50 & 60; one white female (20-30) and one (30-40).
In the 1840 US Census Dinwiddie County, Petersburg, only a John Tyrer, possibly his son, is listed living in Petersburg East Ward, as a white male (20-30), with two free colored persons (under 10) and two (10-24), and one female (under 10), one (10-24), one (24-36).
Of note, in the 1830 US Census Henrico Co., Richmond, a Thomas Tyrer resides in Richmond’s Madison Ward, possibly another relative or James Tyrer’s son. In the 1850 US Census for Henrico Co., Richmond, a Thomas Tyrer, b. abt. 1806, England, is also listed as a gunsmith living, age 44, with his wife Sarah, age 43, born in Virginia. There children were James, 20, clerk; Thomas 18, gunsmith; William, 16, clerk; Henry, 14; Edward, 9; Charles, 7; Glena D., 20; also living with them were, Sarah Harrison, 17; Carter Whorton, 21, gunsmith; Robert Gregory, gunsmith.
