Are you sure your Tynes family is from Virginia? If so, that's an important clue. Most of the black Tynes families of Virginia (at least from the southeastern part of the state) are descended from a group of slaves who were freed in 1802 by a plantation owner named Timothy Tynes. It isn't easy to trace them through the records, because so many of them had similar or identical names, but that's probably where you should look.
Was your grandfather Henry Tynes Sr. born by 1920?If so, you should be able to find him on the 1920 census (or earlier), and see who his parents were.If you live near a library with a decent genealogy section, ask to see their census index books.
