Dear Mr. Simpson,

Thanks for responding to my query. These are the records of the Stafford County militia, 1781-1856. I'm familiar with both Jeremiah B. Templeman and John C. Tyler, but you are absolutely correct about there being some confusion over names. Apparently, the militia clerk writing the names was only marginally literate and I've had a time figuring out some of the names. He generally spelled things as he heard them and was creative in his spelling to say the least. Fortunately, I've worked with the county history long enough to figure out who most (not all) of the men were and to be reasonably adept at reading old handwriting. I had my doubts about Sepleman, but that was as close as I could get to a translation. I thought I'd throw it out on Genforum and see if anyone recognized it.

Are you related to the Stafford Simpsons? There was a Jesse Simpson in the militia in 1798.

Thanks again!
Jerrilynn
