The Prince William County, Virginia, (PWC) library has a manuscript compiled by Dale Mueller in 2000 titled "The Westmoreland Tylers." He discusses Charles Tyler (b. mid-1600s) from Westmoreland County and his descendants, many of whom settled in Prince William County.
It sounds like your ancestor might be the Daniel Tyler who spent his early years in Amherst County, Virginia, and migrated to Ohio in the 1830s. This Daniel's father was named Charles Tyler (see Wills of Amherst County, which lists Daniel Tyler as the administrator of Charles Tyler's estate, 1795). Some genealogists refer to him as Nelson Charles Tyler (possibly because the name of one of Daniel's sons was Nelson C[harles?] Tyler -- see Daniel's Amer. Rev. Pension Application).
No documents have yet been uncovered identifying the origins of Charles Tyler of Amherst County, Daniel's father. But Dale Mueller argues in his manuscript that Charles of Amherst was the son of William Tyler & Margaret Pratt (or another wife) of Westmoreland County, and William was the son of Charles Tyler of Westmoreland. However, some might question his argument for connecting Charles Tyler of Amherst to the Westmoreland/Prince William Tylers.
Try contacting the PWC Library. They may be willing to send you a copy of Dale Mueller's manuscript.
