Samuel and Ajax Tyer are direct linage in my family tree. I am originally from Arkansas and have much history on the Tyer's. We have traced our original ancestor "Thomas Tyrer", to Dismal Swamp, North Carolina. I do not know why he changed the last name. Evidently he was a man of some wealth as the coast of North Carolina is shallow and long boats had to be hired to bring their possesions ashore. From study the root of the Tyer name is TYR, Thor's brother. The ER ending is an English suffix for "son of". We believe the original Tyer's were Normands.
