Looking for records of my grandparents in Vernon, 1880-1889. Thomas Anderson WHETSTONE operated a commissary, outfitting trail drivers as they left for Kansas. He and Lemuel Gray TOWNSEND married there in February 1889 and left before December.
Grandmother may have met him there. She was in Vernon in 1888 and probably earlier, living with relatives. Perhaps there was a newspaper with the engagement or wedding announcement?
I would also like to know if there is a history of the county with information on the commissary. I'll be grateful for any information.
Thanks, Pat Woods
