William Neal Hicks

I am looking for any info anyone cares to share with me on William N(eal)Hicks, who appeared on the 1930 Wheeler Co. Census, along with his wife Cassie H(arriet) and daughter Maude S. and his parents, siblings and descendants. If he is the same person that I think he is, he was the son of Nelson Anderson Hicks and Sarah Ann Maggart, who left Tennessee, sometime between 1850 and 1860, where Nelson appeared in the Tulare Co, Ca census of 1860. (His family was not listed with him, which leads me to believe that he left them along the way somewhere with family, while he went to the gold fields. I have found several Nelson Hicks since that time, but have not been able to positively identify my Nelson Hicks. I saw a message on the Internet once inquiring about this same family, and it was mentioned that he was at one time living in Greenville, TX. However, no time frame was mentioned. They mentioned that Nelson was born in Arkaty, Virginia, when actuality, he was born in a place called Arcadia, Sullivan Co., Tn. ca 1829/1830.

I have seen this same William in different census records, being born in Tennessee and Virgina. As I said, he was born in Sullivan Co., Tn, but given the close proximity to Scott Co., and Washington Co., Va. (where he had other relatives by-the-way), it could explain the confusion in thinking he was actually born in Virginia.

I found William N. (29)in the 1880 Hunt Co., Tx census, along with a brother, J.T. (24). William was born in Sullivan Co., Tn in 1850. The census of 1880 in Hunt Co., showed the brother J.T. born in Virginia. If this is the case, it would mean that Nelson did not leave the Tennessee area before about 1854, as Sullivan Co., Tn. borders Scott Co., Va, as well as Washington Co., Va. They could have moved the short distance from Sullivan Co., Tenn. to Virginia during that time and it would explain why J.T. was born in Virginia.

I am trying to find out what happened to Nelson and Sarah Ann Hicks and thier family, William N. and also an older sister Margaret, who was born ca 1848. In 1850, Sullivan Co., Tenn. census, they also had Sarah's younger sister Ellen Maggart living with them.

William Neal Hicks and Cassie Harriet Hicks are buried in the Wheeler Cemetery, Wheeler Co., Tx. William died ca 1936 and Cassie died ca 1942.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks much,
Betty Bishop Willoughby
