A tribute to Judge Bowen appeared in the Wharton Spectator newspaper after his death in 1923.

"In Memorium (sic)
In the death of Judge J. R. Bowen, another Confederate veteran has passed from the thin ranks of those heroic men who wore the gray, and joined his comrades "beyond the river." He no longer needs the loyal ministry of the Daughters of the Confederacy, but with the cross of honor over his pulseless heart, and a wreath of immortelles upon his grave(,) we pay a silent tribute to his memory. To his sorrowing family we tender our loving sympathy. May the sweet promises of our Lord to the widow and fatherless comfort and sustain them.

Committee: Mrs. R. B. Huston, Mrs. W. L. Hall, Mrs. L. B. Outlar"

The above ladies were members of the now defunct JEB Stuart chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy from Wharton.

Judge Bowen received the Southern Cross of Honor and was apparently buried with it. He was in Co K, 35th TX Cavalry (a Wharton Co unit). Judge Bowen and his wife, Elizabeth Rebecca Zirkle Bowen, both received Confederate pensions in Wharton Co.

I don't recall any photos at the Wharton Co Museum of Judge Bowen, but they have a lot of information there, and I may have overlooked them.
