train routes in the 1880's

I have been trying to find out what the train routes in 1880 and 1881 was. My great grandparents (Cornelius and Jane Hamilton) were in Wharton, Wharton County, Texas in 1880 and by the end of 1881 my great grandfather was in New York City and remarried. I do not know what happened to my great grandmother. They had 5 children. I know 2 of them had been left with other people to live. 3 children stayed in Texas and their only daughter died in Wharton.

I was hoping someone would know the route that my great grandfather would have taken. I can only think that maybe my great grandmother died before they left (or remarried) or she died on the way to New York.

Any info would be appreciated. I just need a direction to look.
Thanks,
Kathleen
