Texas didn't "officially" begin recording vital records until 1903, and even then some counties didn't get on board until later.

Death certificates only as accurate as the knowledge of the informant. Have you tried the SSDI? He filled out his application for his SS number and that application should show the names of his parents, his residence at the time of application etc.
