Two daughters of Washington County colonist James Cooper married two sons of Alexander Wilkins McDade: Caroline Frances Tennessee Cooper married James Wilkins McDade, and Margaret Cooper married James' brother, John Armstrong McDade.

James Cooper was one of the commissioners appointed to lay out the Town of Brenham. Son-in-law James Wilkins McDade was the first sheriff of Brenham, was a principal backer of the Washington County Railroad Company, James serving as president of the WCRR in 1862. The McDade's and the Cooper's original lands fell on Caney Creek close to its juncture with the Washington-Austin Co. line.
