Dear Suzanne,

I was thrilled to receive a reply to my posting regarding research on my grandfather's family (John William Smith) as I'd been looking for relatives for a while without any success. You have much more info on their earlier background than I do. My dad never said much about his family and I never met his mother, though we did meet some of the siblings and half-siblings. I remember visiting Weyman's family when they lived in or near Houston in the mid-1930's and of course, we lived near the sisters, Annie Lee, Mary Belle and their families at various time over the years,in Houston, Marathon, Texas and in California. Both Annie,Mary & their husbands are buried in Atascadero, CA where they all spent their final years. I don't recall Kate,as she died at a young age, though my mother knew her & said she visited Marathon. I think Kate had a daughter, Helen, who lived in Colorado, and a son, about whom I know nothing. I think I remember Will coming to CA in the 1940's to visit us. All these people were John Smith's first family, and my dad, Virgil George, was the first child of John and Mary Sue (King) Malone, a widow who had 4 children of her own; Perry, "Doc", Docia, and Clarence.

Besides my father, they had daughters,Bonnie & Bobbie, and a son, Vernon. Vernon was killed by a stray bullet while playing in their yard when he was a small boy. After John died, Mary Sue married a Mr.Gurle & they had no children. She died sometime in the 1950-s or 1960's, I think. After his father died,& his mother married Mr. G., my father was sent from the Diboll area when he was about 12 to spend the summer in Marathon with his older half-sister, Mary Belle Wyatt, and he preferred to stay there. She raised him until he was grown and he went to El Paso to work for the railroad. He was injured in an accident there & returned to Marathon to live, where he met and married my mother, Gussie
Page.

William married an Anna Matthews & they had 2 children, La Nelle (born 1906) and Maurice, (Billo). La Nelle was born the same year as my dad & was a very beautiful woman. She was a queen or princess of one of San Antonio's flower parades or festivals in the '20s. Weyman's first wife's name was Gertrude & they had a son & daughter. They were divorced & he remarried ? & they had 3 sons. I have info on the rest of John's children & will share it if you don't have it. I have a few pictures, one of Mary Sue, (not an attractive woman to have had 3 husbands), but none of John.

Where do you live? We've been in Rocklin, near Sacramento, for the past 30 yrs. I'm trying to research my maternal grandfather's (George Washington Page) side of the family without a lot of luck. He, too, left home at an early age & became a drover on cattle drives between Texas and Kansas before settling in Marathon to ranch.

I'll be looking forward to hearing from you & hope you learn new information. You may contact me directly at Gerry@infostations.com if you like.

Sincerely,
Gerry Sawyer
