Hi Gerry,
I too am doing research on John W. Smith. He is my great grandfather. I will be out of town for a few days and am hoping to stop along the way to do some research in Waller & Grimes Counties. Quickly, as I am about to leave and came upon your post just now I will give you a little information I have and hope we can connect when I get back.
I virtually knew nothing about my grandfather's (Weyman Milliard Smith, John W.'s oldest son; Weyman's oldest son, John Weyman Smith is my father, deceased) family until about six months ago when I began researching this line. I have been very lucky in finding the amount of info I have( my dad's youngest half brother has been researching for some time and never could find anything. Great grandfather John William Smith was the oldest son of William H. Smith and Elizabeth Stephenson. William H.'s father was Solomon, his mother Emily and they lived in Grimes and Waller Co. in the early 1850's and may have been in east Texas before that; this is my rock wall in research right now. William H. Smith's wife Elizabeth Stephenson is a main character in the family as ties to her family seem strong. She was daughter of James Stephenson and Amelia Bell. The Stephenson's came to Texas in the early or mid 1820's and Elizabeth was born in Texas in 1829. Her mother Amelia Bell was I believe a sister of James & Thomas Bell who founded Bellville, mnay of these men have ties to early Texas independence skirmishes & the Battle of San Jacinto. We are about to leave now so please e-mail me and I can give you more info. Looking forward to hearing from you!
