There has been at least six Rock Island communities and settlements in Texas located in Kleberg, Polk, Colorado, Liberty, Marion and Waller Counties. I suspect the Rock Island you are seeking is located in the northwestern part Waller County near the Brazos River. http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=30.17472&lon=-96.11583 This is a link to a topo map of the area. The Rock Island community is situated along FM 1736, roughly midway between Donohoe Creek and Walnut Bayou. The red cross icon indicates the site of the Rock Island Cemetery. The new Handbook of Texas has an interesting article on the origin and possible location of the Rock Island community: http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online/articles/view/RR/hvr60.html This account is not entirely accurate but nevertheless interesting and useful. It's doubtful that Rock Island was ever located on the west bank of the Brazos. Perhaps the confusion arises from the fact that Waller County was not created until 1873. After the Texas Revolution, the region became part of Washington County and later became part of Austin County. Waller County was eventually formed from portions of Grimes County and Austin County in 1873. Prior to 1858, Rock Island had been the only permanent settlement in this part of what is now Waller County. Here is a link to more information on Waller County from the Handbook of Texas: http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online/articles/view/WW/hcw2.html
