My 'genealogy' computer is "in the shop".
I am responding (from a remote computer).
All my files are on that computer = so I do not have access to my database, but can give somewhat of an answer to your question.
'My' Birdwells were of Giles CO TN.
Thomas Gaines Birdwell marr Tirza.
Branches of this family, including Thomas G. and his family, ended up in Walker CO TX <= why I checked this message board.
A little background:
Thomas Gaines Birdwell, h/o Tirza, was the son of 'my' John Birdwell (proven by Giles CO TN deeds).
I will refer to this John as 'my' elder John of Giles.
At this point I need to back track and explain a little about this Birdwell family.
I believe, as do several others, that 'my' elder John of Giles was the s/o Robert & Jane Birdwell.
This Robert d.abt 1815 in Giles CO TN and his probate was filed there. 'My' elder John of Giles and Jane (relict of Robert) were listed as the Executors of Robert's estate in the 1815 Crt records. Some of these early Giles CO TN records are extant, but many more were lost.
The only other Birdwell that 'pops' up in early Giles CO TN (so far) is William Birdwell who was the bro/o the Robert who d.1815.
William Birdwell is then listed 'of' Jackson CO TN (abt 1816 +/-) per a Giles CO TN deed record. He apparently remained in Jackson CO the rest of his life.
Robert and William Birdwell were the sons of George Birdwell of VA.
All of this proven.
It is my belief that some have confused 'my' elder John of Giles with his Uncle John (s/o the elder George Birdwell of VA).
I still need to track Uncle John's clan, but he seemingly (per others) may have also been in another county of TN and later died in Texas (?Collin? CO if I am not mistaken)
I have yet to find anyone that can give me a reason why they list John the s/o elder George of VA as same man as 'my' John of Giles.
Why my interest in these Birdwells?
My ancestor was the sibling of Thomas G. Birdwell s/o John.
You asked his age and location.
Thomas G. was found living in Giles CO TN early 1800's. As I recollect, he started to 'pop' up in the Giles CO TN deed records about 1828 = further proof of his approximate age. I tracked him in the census, but do not recall the specifics regarding his family group (his wife & children), but he ended up in Walker CO TX. So far it looks like he left Giles CO TN mid 1830's, but still pulling the Giles deed records looking for an indication when he sold his real property.
There are variants for the given name of Tirza, but I have found that she generally she went by the spelling of 'Tirza'. If you want to check the census, use Thomas Birdwell as your search criteria born in TN with a birth year of 1804 +/- 5 yrs. You will probably have more luck with those results since Tirza was listed differently in some of the records.
I suspect, what with the unusual name of Tirza paired with the name of Birdwell (also not as common a surname) that your Tirza Birdwell Thornton might have been named after Tirza the w/o Thomas G. I do not know if that means she was a Birdwell, only that the odds are that her parents knew these Birdwells.
My computer will be in the shop over the week end. When I get it back... hopefully all files intact, I can send you more. If those files are not intact, then it will take me a little more time to load my 'backups'. Either way, I think this is a possible lead for you. Please keep my email address and follow up next week. Hopefully we can exchange some more information.
Once I get my computer back,
I would like to know a little more about your Tirza Birdwell Thornton.
