Hi again G.T...

This might help tie the Tuckers and the Shannons... As you will see... It also came from the History of Walker County!!! I think this was the additional article that I was referring to in my previous message... at least I hope it was because at this time... I don't remember!!! Also, I am a descendant of William Montgomery who married Polly James. William was the brother of Margaret (wife of Owen Shannon) and also came to the Walker/Montgomery/Grimes county areas. There are numerous links to all the families that we are concerned with ... I may never get these folks sorted out!!! As for Jonas... which family are you talking about... (my head swims with names all the time...?)??? I do have a Josias (Jonas?) Shannon (one year older than Belsora) who married Ruth Mills (dau. of Freelove and Wm.). My records indicate that they were both children of John Shannon (Owen/Margaret's son) and Charlotte Wilson Shannon. The other children that have for John and Charlotte at this time are... Simon, James and Rebecca. It appears that John Shannon had a previous wife and six children prior to the Charlotte Wilson marriage. I often wonder if these prolific folks knew what a paperwork disaster this would be in 150 years if they had this many kiddos... (tee-hee)... Write me back and I'll see if I have anything else in my database that'll help...

til later...

*       Excerpt from "The History of Walker County Texas" prepared and published by the Walker County Genealogical Society... Vol. 1 (page 754)

              TUCKER-WELCH-SHANNON (F966)

Robert Leigh Tucker, always known as "Leigh" was born on April 16, 1866, at Sandy in Grimes County, Texas. He was the son of John B. Tucker and Charlotte Welch, and the grandson of Albert and Mary A. Tucker and Mark Welch and Belzora Shannon, all who settled in the Grimes-Walker-Montgomery counties.

Leigh had two sisters and a brother: John Albert, who married Susie Davis; Bettie Ann, who married Lucian L. Leonard December 27, 1896;; and Minnie, who married Fred Cubstead. The Leonards and the Cubsteads were long-time residents of Huntsville, residing there until their deaths and are all buried in the area. Lucian Leonard served as sheriff of Walker County for twelve years.

On December 25, 1910, Leigh Tucker and Lela Pearl Gartman of Huntsville were married. After a period of farming and working as a prison guard, he moved his family to Port Arthur, Texas, where they resided until his death in August 1955. Their sons Cecil, J.C., and Bernice Lee were born in Shiro - Bernice Lee died as a toddler and is buried in Sandy.

Cecil, born December 10, 1911, married Anna Lou Wiltz, no issue, and J.C., born on December 15, 1915, married Dorean Vickery of Edgewood, Texas, on April 22, 1938. Their only daughter Geraldine, born February 25, 1940, married Jonathan E. Boyd in August of 1960. Leigh and Lela's other direct descendants are: two great-grandchildren, Jon Edward Boyd, born January 22, 1962; Joan Elise Boyd, born November 29, 1965, married to Jeffrey A. Baughman and one great-great-granddaughter Amy Nicole Baughman, born September 17, 1983.

Leigh's father John Tucker died May 7, 1887, after contracting pneumonia while trying to protect his log cabin and newly-built rail fence from a forest fire. Charlotte Welch Tucker married James Sims whose children by Nancy E. Tucker, (who died in 1866 and is buried in Sandy) were Curtis, Matt, Alviie, Mrs. Jesse Mayes, and Ewell, who at 96 years still lives in Huntsville with one of his sons, Melvin. Nancy E. Tucker was also the sister of John Tucker. The Sims and Tucker children were especially close since they were also double first cousins, and Uncle Ewell Sims still likes to relate stories of his boyhood with Leigh Tucker and the other children. Since Leigh's father died when he was about a year old, Jim Sims was the only father he ever knew. He grew up on the old Tucker place in West Sandy and attended the Methodist church there. They still hold Tucker reunions in Sandy every year close to the Labor Day weekend.

Jim Sims also preceeded Charlotte Welch in death in 1925. Charlotte was born Montgomery County July 24, 1851, but lived most of her 91 years in Walker County where she died on March 31, 1942. A tombstone marks her grave in the Farris Chapel Cemetery in Walker County, she having come to Walker County whe she married John Tucker. She was the daughter of Mark Welch and Belzora Shannon. Charlotte's other grandchildren include Morrison Leonard and wife Lorraine, no issue, and now both deceased; Mattie Ola Leonard, who married Douglas Reeves; they have two daughters, Charlotte and Sheila; L. L. Leonard, Jr. and wife Hazel, no issue; Alla Lee Cubstead and husband George Keisler, three children; Laney Cubstead and wife Dorothy, one son; and Melba Cubstead and husband Patrick Hansen, who have two daughters. Melba was an employee of Sam Houston State Teachers College for several years befor her marriage and lived in California for many years. The majority of Charlotte's descendants live in Texas.
