There are 2 different groups of Hobbs who came to Van Zandt County back in the 1800's.
The book mentioned on this message board something like
"William Hobbs from 17__ to 1840???" that is the Hobbs that William Hobbs came from Sampson Co., NC to Talladega
County, Ala. in the early 1820 and William died and his son Lewis Hobbs came from Sampson Co. to Talladega and handled the estate in Talladega Co., Ala.
The second group of Hobbs family who arrived in the middle !1840-60's era were from Monroe Co., GA, John N. "MD" Hobbs
his son was John Mann who settled in Van Zandt Co., then moved on and became the postmaster for Carroll, Texas.
This group of Hobbs, John N. "MD" Hobbs, he was the oldest son of Solomon Hobbs and Malinda Davis. Solomon was born in NC in 1803, probably Wake Co., NC. Solomon's father was George Hobbs, wife Mary, and Solomon died about 1893 in Monroe Co. GA. Solomon's brothers: William H. "Billy" Hobbs b. 1805 NC, Charles Newton Hobbs, Sr. b. 1807, Elixabeth Hobbs b. 1809 (married James Arnold) Thomas Hobbs b. 1823, Rebecca and Mary Hobbs about 2 more brothers and 2 more sisters (names unknown reached teen years). The father of George Hobbs was William Hobbs died 1802 without a will.
Charles & Rebecca Hobbs were in Butts Co. in 1830 Census, Talladega Co. Ala. in 1840 Census, Wm. H. "Billy" Hobbs and wife Martha Davis were in Troup Co. GA in the 1840 Census, Talladega Co., Ala in 1850's, 1860, 1870's. Their father George, with Rebecca and Mary, came to Talladega about 1860 (wife Mary must have died) George died about 1870, Charles died about 1880, Rebecca returned to
Monroe Co. GA. after her father George died.
I have been researching this group of Hobbs since the 1960's. Glad I finally found out some of the Hobbs in East Texas were kin to our Hobbs.
II am anxious to find out who the Hobbs in Nacogdoches, Texas are kin too. AND, I would like to know if John N. "MD" Hobbs, if the N stands for "Newton"???
