The following is an old yellowing newspaper clipping I found among my grandmother’s items. She told me the Mixon family lived near her when she lived near Zion Hill Cemetery in Van Zandt County, Texas.(before 1939) My grandmother (Ora Noble) was not “kin” to this family, just friends. I do not know what newspaper or date of the issue. I am posting this on the Mence, Mixon and Van Zandt County, Tx GenWeb sites for the benefit of anyone looking for Miss Mence.
       Young Lady Suicides (title)
Miss Ruby Mence a popular young lady in her circle took her own life Monday just afternoon by taking strychnine. The cause of her actions is not known, she left no word or note of any kind, she seemed to be enjoying life as well as any young person could. She attended an all day singing at Big Rock and Canton Sunday with friends. She was slightly ill Monday morning but would not have a doctor saying she would be alright the next day. Miss Mence is an orphan girl and was making her home with her sister and her husband Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Mixon. She took the poison while Mr. Mixon was working in the field and while her sister had gone a short distance from the house to get some drinking water. The poison took effect at once, she died before a doctor could get there and administer treatment.
Miss Mence was 18 years old and has two brothers, two half brothers, four sisters, two half sisters and a step-mother. Funeral services were conducted at Cool Springs cemetery, Van Zandt Co. Tuesday afternoon by Rev. Malcolm Rowan.
