I had a similar situation re: a lynching and subsuquent trial in Polk County in 1877. The district court records were in the courthouse attic. Start with the "Criminal Docket" an index of case numbers and defendants. For this time frame, the records may have been transferred to the Sam Houston Regional Library in Huntsville, TX.
